Irascible chefs march down the path
Of jelly from the Grapes of Wrath,
Wave pizza peels with fingers blistered,
And flourish their racks with doughty wrists toward
Bakers of pie from the Apple of Discord.
Grapes of Wrath – The Grapes of Wrath is a 1939 novel by John Steinbeck (1902-1968); the title is taken from a line in the US Civil War song “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” by Julia Ward Howe (1819‑1910):
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
which in turn comes from the Bible, notably Revelation 14:19
(Revised Standard Version)
Apple of Discord – From the Greek myth of the Judgment of Paris: Paris, the son of the King of Troy, was asked to judge a beauty contest among three Goddesses — Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. The winner was to receive the prize of a golden apple. Each of the contestants tried to bribe him. Aphrodite won by promising him that the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen, would be his. It turned out that Helen was married, and her husband called on all the chieftains of Greece to avenge the abduction of his wife. Thus began the Trojan War.
